Ben's Bridge Corner
News:
- Finally had an opportunity, after reading about double squeezes, to pull one off!
- Long overdue as an update: The run to the GNT was short-lived. We survived a rocky first round to advane from our 3-way and then dominated a bit better in a 3-way in round two. In our head-to-head semifinal match we took at 16-IMP deficit into halftime. I thought we might be able to overcome that but it was not to be. the team that knocked us out went on to win. Owell, next year!
- The relay club system I play with Dad now has a name. As it evolved from Seismic, it has been dubbed the "Aftershock Club." I've put up a section for it.
- There's something about the 10
. A little over a year ago, we came one card away from winning a regional BCD swiss with a pickup D team. I (in a clear metnal lapse) pitched the 10
to allow a slam through that cost us our last match. Last night I played a club game and this time kept the 10
when I should have pitched it. Thus gave back an undertrick that we needed to secure a good score on a board (defending down 2 doubled instead of 3 against our game, all white). Later, Dad pitched the 10
at trick 12 in favor of a spade, despite having the K
on the board, this gave away an overtrick. We just always seem to mess up with this card. - The Santa Clara NAP Unit finals were last weekend (10/19). Despite some truly horrid play, Dad and I managed 2nd in C to qualify for the district finals in January. We even qualified in B (not that we'll play there). One hand in particular was worthy of a story
- Dad and I picked up fellow sub-300 MP teammates at the Santa Clara Regional and proceeded to win our bracketed KO!
- No GNTs for me this year; I wasn't able to find a team. Oh well, maybe next year.
- I haven't done a good job of updating this. Dad and I were going to play in the NAPC district finals on January 21st, but something came up that day so we knew we wouldn't be able to go. Instead, we played in the flight B district qual, since we had managed (somehow) to qualify in flight B in our semifinal match. The results were not pretty, as we had a mid 43% game in the first session. A better evening game brought us up to about 46.5% or so, but that of course was nowhere near qualifying. Still, considering that we had the lowest combined masterpoint total in the room and still finished in the middle (ish) of the pack, we can't complain too much.
- Played in the SF NABC with Dad. We finished 2nd in B in the first session of a stratified open pair event before crashing out at dead last in the evening. We got knocked out of our first-round match in the knockout we played with Carol and Jan, losing by 4 imps. The same team finished 4th in B in a stratified open BAM Saturday night, and we picked up a 5th team member for the Sunday Swiss. The team didn't fare well, going 2-5 and finishing with 58 VPs, 12 below average. It cannot be said that fun was not had by all, however. Thanks to Carol, Jan, and Alan for playing with us!
- If you're reading this, then the news is that this page is now up and running!
Welcome to the bridge section of my site. I've been playing for about 4 years now, which means that I'm really still a beginner, but I'd like to think I'm good for a beginnner. I've compiled a collection of my favorite bridge related stuff. See the menu on the left for navigation, and enjoy!
